One of my many hobbies is collecting autographs. I spent 2000-2006 focusing on NASCAR Nextel Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series drivers and was able to get every full time driver to sign in person with the exception of Jeff Gordon (I finally got him to sign for me in the Fall of 2007 at AMS!). Around the middle of the season in 2006 I got back into baseball for the first time since the early 90's and near the end of that same year I also got back into collecting baseball cards which naturally led to my wanting to get them signed. For now I am attempting to get the following baseball card sets built twice: one unsigned and another signed.

August 31st I went back up to Rome to chase the Columbus Catfish and Rome Braves. I didn't have many cards on Catfish players so I mostly focused on the Braves for the 2008 team set.

August 29th I went up to Rome, GA to chase the Charleston RiverDogs and Rome Braves. I was VERY surprised so many guys were still down in Charleston as so many of them are top prospects in the Yankees' farm system. I did very well and wish all my outings were like this.

August 26th I tried my luck with the Marlins postgame at Turner Field and their hotel. This is the worst I've ever done with this team as they are - with the exception of Ramirez, Sanchez and Olsen - all really good about signing.

Monday, August 11th and Wednesday, August 13th I chased the Chicago Cubs. I did not do well as this team apparently does not like to sign much in Atlanta. Also, I could not spend much time chasing them since the series was during the week. While I failed in obtaining the three main players I need for my '06 '52 Rookies set (Theriot, Soto and Soriano) I did get a few set cards signed. Friday, April 18th through Sunday, April 20th I chased the Dodgers at Turner Field and their hotel. The team has a new rule this year keeping all players from signing anywhere but the stadium. This is good and bad as it makes it somewhat easier for the players to have time to themselves but makes collectors have to fight off the dealers a LOT more at the stadium. I ended up doing pretty well but was not able to get two cards for my 2006 Topps Rookies '52 Edition set signed that I really wanted to get done (Broxton and Loney logo variation short prints). Sunday, January 19th I attended the St. Louis Cardinals Winter Caravan stop in Mt. Vernon, IL on my way home from Royals FanFest. Saturday, January 12th and Sunday, January 13th I attended the 2008 Atlanta Braves FanFest at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. This had to be the worst experience attempting to obtain autographs I have ever had. The entire thing was poorly setup, poorly run and very poorly thought out. I took the opportunity to speak with the person who claimed the entire thing as her "baby" both days and let her know just how bad the idea was before I went in Saturday and exactly how right I was when I saw her Sunday. Everyone with whom I spoke thoughout the weekend absolutely disliked the way it was run and will probably never go back again if the Braves' PR/Marketing department continues down this path in the future. Saturday, December 22nd Chipper Jones and Brad McCann were instructors at a couple baseball hitting clinics at the Chipper Jones' 10th Inning Baseball Academy in Suwanee, GA. Tuesday, November 27th I went back to the Hoop Hall Experience as Dominique Wilkins, George Gervin, David Thompson and Walt Bellamy were scheduled to be there signing. This time Wilkins showed up but only stayed for maybe 10-15 minutes due to a prior TV commitment in downtown Atlanta. He'd told the promoter he was going to show up early to make up for not coming Friday and having to leave early on this night however that didn't pan out. The Atlanta Hawks held an open scrimmage at Woodward Academy in College Park, GA on Thursday, October 25th. Due to the team just getting into town after their last preseason game early that same morning there was no organized signing afterward as there typically is. After standing outside in the rain for just less than seven hours I got both on cards from the '07 Press Pass VIP set I'm attempting to get signed in one weekend while the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series is in town.

The Atlanta Hawks Paint The Town event was held at the new World of Coke on Saturday, October 20th. All eighteen players on the current roster were in attendance for the free public signing from 3:15-4P. I was one of the lucky few who made it through the line twice as it was cut off a bit early. I got everyone but Salim Stoudamire as he had to leave early and was gone before I got to where he had been sitting so I ended with 17 different players on four different items. The list is below:

Hines Ward and Dennis Scott were signing at the Verizon Wireless store on LaVista Road in Tucker, GA on Saturday, October 13th so I went there and picked both up. The line wasn't too bad but the people in charge started limiting everyone to one signed item for Hines due to the number of things people at the front were getting signed. The Braves came home from their final road trip of the year tonight (9/30). I was one of roughly 20 people at Turner Field hounding for autographs which was roughly 18 more people that that I thought there would be. It was rookie hazing night so Clint Sammons was dressed up as a character from "The Incredibles" while Jose Ascanio, Brandon Jones and Manny Acosta were all dressed as blonde women in dresses.
